What if the client downloads it but installs later?
Your code is embedded in the downloaded file itself. Even a week later and on a different computer, the software will tell the site on first launch that it came from you.
Does the client have to enter anything?
No. They simply download via your link and install as usual. The crediting happens automatically.
Can I hand out several files?
Yes. Every referral file has its own link, and the statistics are counted separately for each one.
